Half way through the year

We’re nearly half way through the year and change continues. Change in Egypt with elections again; change in a new round of financial stimulus for the UK, again and of course change in Greece with the elections on Sunday and hopefully a clear decision as to direction by Monday or Tuesday. The repercussions of that will have an impact on all Europe but Spain and Italy particularly will be in the spotlight.  Uncertainty makes businesses nervous. We might not like what we hear next week but if it helps to give businesses around the world a indication of the direction of travel for Europe, perhaps companies and organisations can start moving forward.

And then there is the run up to the American election!

How to lose senior executives

I recently had a conversation with a contact of mine, who was a senior director of an international industrial company. After the meeting, I realised that there was still some way to go to enlighten top management in the way they sometimes behave, if they to keep, and get the best out of people they employ.

Several things happened to make this person realise they did not want to stay with this particular company, but amongst them was the way in which top management behaved and the impact that had.

In a period of economic downturn, when companies are watching costs, trying to maintain profitability and competitors are encroaching on the customer base, the one thing a company cannot afford to lose, are good senior directors and managers. This is where ‘Vision’, ‘Leadership’ and ‘Team’ become critical to riding the storm, surviving and moving the business forward. All directors have a responsibility to the company and its stakeholders and only by pulling together and working as a team, can this be achieved. If a director fails in his/her duty, the Chairman must be made aware of it and deal with it, otherwise colleagues will leave and all stakeholders will suffer.
