It’s been a couple of months since I wrote a blog, so reflected back over that time to see what’s been happening.
This picture was taken at the 2014 Polis Conference which was held in London recently. The theme for the conference was based on the openness and transparency of business and, in this particular case, journalism.
When I was listening to the speakers and talking to some of the other delegates, it struck me that there still isn’t enough discussion in business about transparency in the workplace. We still hear of companies where departments work in ‘silos’ and managers compete for the attention of the Board, in a negative way. There’s nothing wrong with a little competitive spirit but with more communication from senior managers, that spirit could be re-aligned to match the company’s goals and in doing so, give greater job satisfaction and a sense of achievement to those managers.
People work better when they know how they are contributing to the overall goals and communication and recognition from senior managers goes a long way in focusing effort, in a positive way.
